Kraken Parent Payward Lands $100M From Nasdaq Ventures

1d ago

Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, has drawn a US$100 million investment from Nasdaq Ventures. The deal ties a crypto-native trading group to the venture arm of one of the world's best-known exchange operators.

Traditional market infrastructure firms have widened their exposure to digital assets in recent years, even as regulators in the United States and Europe tighten rules covering trading platforms. For Nasdaq's investment arm, backing an established crypto group offers a route into a sector it had largely observed from a distance. The investment lands as institutional interest in digital-asset markets remains uneven, with periods of heavy inflows alternating with sharp pullbacks.

Kraken ranks among the older crypto exchanges still operating at scale, and Payward has previously turned to outside capital to fund expansion. A cheque of this size suggests investors continue to see durable value in trading infrastructure, despite the volatility that has repeatedly reshaped the industry.

Beyond the headline figure, details of the arrangement have not been made public. How the two companies intend to work together, and where the capital will be directed, remain open questions. Whether the investment comes with a commercial partnership attached is likewise unclear.
