Mastercard Debuts AI Assistant to Help Cardholders Use Benefits

Just now

Mastercard is introducing an artificial-intelligence assistant built to help cardholders understand and use the perks attached to their cards. The payments company says the tool addresses a familiar gap: benefits that exist on paper but go unclaimed in practice.

Card benefits have long been a lever for engagement and loyalty, yet their value depends on awareness. When holders are unsure what their card includes or how to access it, perks sit unused, and the marketing spend behind them delivers little. The assistant is meant to close that distance by explaining coverage and pointing customers toward redemption.

The launch places Mastercard among payment networks betting that generative AI can improve customer service while making premium card features easier to justify. Rival networks and issuers have been steadily adding digital tools that surface rewards and protections, and the competition is increasingly about how visible those features are rather than whether they exist.

For issuers, clearer benefits can support retention and cardholder satisfaction, particularly as annual fees face closer scrutiny. The open question is whether an assistant actually lifts usage, or simply adds another layer between customers and the terms they need to read.
