CIB Bank offers free contactless payment rings with Visa

Hungary's CIB Bank has begun offering eligible customers a contactless payment ring free of charge, working alongside Visa on the initiative. The device, known as RingPay, is designed to let users complete everyday purchases by tapping the ring against a contactless terminal instead of reaching for a card or a phone.

The launch places the Hungarian lender among a growing group of banks experimenting with wearable payment formats. Rings, key fobs and bracelets appeal to issuers because they keep a payment credential on the customer at all times, and because the novelty factor can strengthen loyalty and draw marketing attention.

Contactless acceptance has spread widely across European retail, making tap-to-pay the default at many checkouts. For a wearable to function, the payment credential must be provisioned securely and tied to the customer's account, with the same fraud protections that apply to conventional plastic.

Eligibility terms rest with the bank, which is positioning the ring as an addition to its existing card offering rather than a replacement for it. Whether wearable payments gain lasting traction in Hungary will depend largely on how customers respond once the rings reach their hands.
