Banking Faces Hacking, Automation and Disruption at Once

7h ago

Banks rarely face one challenge at a time. Today they are contending with security breaches, deepening automation, reinvention of their core products and disruption from new entrants - all at once, and all against a backdrop of rapid technological change.

That convergence was the theme of a recent keynote delivered at Visa Next in Poland, which examined the future of money, payments and banking. The talk traced the technological revolutions that shaped the financial system as it exists today and followed the thread forward to the emergence of AI-native banking, where intelligent systems sit at the heart of how services are designed and delivered.

Running through the discussion was a question the industry cannot avoid: is technology being used to make banking better for customers, or simply cheaper for banks? The distinction matters, because the two outcomes are not automatic companions. Cost savings can be pursued without any corresponding improvement in what account holders actually experience.

As automation and artificial intelligence spread further into payments and lending, that question will define which institutions earn trust and which merely cut overhead. The answer is still being written.
