Mollie targets banking rails built for AI agents
The Dutch payments company Mollie has unveiled a venture-style model intended to produce a dedicated intelligence platform and banking layer built specifically for AI agents.
The announcement places Mollie among the payment providers preparing for a shift in how commerce is initiated. Instead of a person tapping through a checkout, software agents could soon search, compare, negotiate and complete purchases on a customer's behalf, which requires infrastructure those agents can access directly.
A banking layer for that scenario would need to handle the practical mechanics of moving money, verifying identity and applying controls on behalf of an end user or business. Mollie's stated approach separates this work into a venture structure, suggesting the company expects to develop the capability iteratively rather than fold it immediately into its existing product line.
Details remain sparse, including how the platform will be governed, which partners will take part and when services might reach the market. The move nonetheless signals that payments firms view agent-driven transactions as a coming category rather than a distant experiment, and that the race to supply the underlying rails is already under way.
