KB Kookmin Bank taps JPMorgan blockchain for trade payments

4h ago

KB Kookmin Bank, one of South Korea’s largest financial institutions, is set to introduce a corporate payment service tailored to importers and exporters. The initiative will be powered by Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, the blockchain-based platform from the US lender. The move underscores the growing integration of distributed-ledger technology into mainstream trade finance.

Kinexys operates through Blockchain Deposit Accounts, commonly referred to as BDAs. These accounts allow real-time settlement of cross-border transactions, potentially reducing the need for intermediaries. For corporate clients handling import and export flows, the service could offer faster execution and clearer transaction visibility.

The adoption of this technology is part of a broader trend in banking, where institutions increasingly test blockchain for payments. Several global lenders have sought to modernize back-end processes that are often slow and costly. This partnership represents a practical step toward reshaping how trade payments are processed.

For J.P. Morgan, the agreement expands the footprint of its Kinexys network across Asia. For KB Kookmin, it creates an opportunity to enhance its service lineup for corporate customers. Details about the rollout schedule remain undisclosed, but the project highlights how blockchain is gaining acceptance in conventional financial systems.
