CFTC Widens Crypto Trading Oversight to Software Providers

1h ago

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is widening its approach to cryptocurrency markets, issuing new rules that address software providers used across digital-asset trading. The move, reported by Investing.com, signals the agency's intent to bring more of the crypto trading stack under its derivatives oversight.

The CFTC has long supervised futures and swaps markets, and it has treated major digital assets such as bitcoin as commodities within its remit. Crypto platforms increasingly depend on outside vendors for order matching, risk systems, market surveillance and settlement tools. Those providers have largely sat at the edge of the regulatory perimeter, even as the venues they serve fall squarely inside it.

By extending requirements to software suppliers, the agency could change how trading platforms vet and rely on third-party technology. Firms may face clearer expectations about which vendors are acceptable and what standards those tools must meet. That could raise compliance costs while also reducing ambiguity for participants seeking to operate in the United States.

The timing and precise obligations remain to be seen, and industry reaction is likely to focus on how far the requirements reach. Even so, the shift reflects a broader push by US regulators to write rules for crypto's supporting infrastructure, not just the exchanges themselves.
