3M Shares Jump After $7.35 Billion Forever Chemicals Settlement
3M shares rallied sharply after the industrial conglomerate said it had reached a $7.35 billion settlement tied to litigation over so-called forever chemicals, a deal that investors greeted as a significant step toward resolving one of the largest legal risks hanging over the company.
The agreement centers on PFAS, a broad family of synthetic compounds used for decades in products ranging from stain-resistant fabrics to firefighting foam. The chemicals resist breaking down in the environment, and their detection in water supplies has drawn intensifying scrutiny and a wave of lawsuits from municipalities, states and individuals.
For shareholders, the move reflects relief more than a firm verdict on the final price. A settlement gives 3M a defined figure to plan around rather than an open-ended stream of claims, letting management concentrate on operations, cost cuts and balance-sheet priorities instead of years of courtroom uncertainty.
Important questions remain about the ultimate cost and the schedule of payments, and the agreement does not extinguish every PFAS-related exposure the company faces. Even so, the market's response suggests investors see the resolution as lifting a cloud that had weighed on the shares.
