Visa and Mastercard Back AI Payments Alliance
Visa and Mastercard have joined the Agentic Payments Alliance, a newly formed coalition focused on AI commerce. The card networks are part of an initial group that also includes payment processor Fiserv, stablecoin issuer Circle, blockchain platform Solana and cross-border payments firm Remitly.
The alliance is designed to bring together payments and technology companies to help guide how artificial intelligence is used in commerce. As AI agents become more capable of handling financial tasks, the group aims to provide direction on the development of this emerging area.
Agentic payments refer to transactions carried out by AI systems acting on behalf of users, from making purchases to managing recurring bills. With AI increasingly embedded in everyday tools, businesses and consumers may soon rely on autonomous agents to interact with payment infrastructure.
By uniting traditional payments players with digital asset and blockchain companies, the alliance hopes to address shared challenges and shape industry norms. The involvement of major incumbents underscores expectations that AI will transform the payments landscape, making collaboration across sectors a priority.
