Standard Chartered issues $200m digital notes on Euroclear

6h ago

Standard Chartered has completed its first issuance of digitally native notes (DNNs), a USD 200 million three-year floating-rate instrument settled on Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure (D-FMI). The transaction marks the first such issuance by a Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) and the first by a UK-based issuer on the platform.

Digitally native notes are debt securities issued and recorded entirely on a digital ledger, bypassing traditional paper-based processes. Euroclear’s D-FMI provides a regulated, institutional-grade infrastructure for issuing, settling, and servicing these digital assets, blending the efficiency of blockchain with the safeguards of a central securities depository.

The landmark deal underscores the growing adoption of digital instruments among large banks. As the first G-SIB and UK issuer to tap D-FMI, Standard Chartered is positioning itself as an early mover in the digital capital markets space, potentially paving the way for peers to follow.

This issuance also highlights how established market infrastructure providers like Euroclear are integrating digital capabilities to serve traditional financial institutions. With a clear regulatory framework and settlement finality, D-FMI aims to reduce complexity and improve transparency in debt issuance, a trend likely to accelerate as more banks explore digital-native instruments.
