S&P 500 Returns to Record After Months of Market Shocks

2h ago

The S&P 500 climbed to a fresh intraday record on Tuesday, extending a rally that has repeatedly survived disruptions which might have stalled it earlier in the year. The benchmark's return to record territory underscores how resilient large-cap US equities have proven despite an unsettled backdrop.

Technology shares did much of the heavy lifting. Easing crude oil prices and lower Treasury yields also helped, giving investors room to look past months of market shocks and rotate back toward risk. Those three forces together provided the fuel for the move higher.

The milestone is notable precisely because of the path taken to reach it. Volatility returned more than once this year, testing the conviction of buyers who had grown accustomed to steady gains. Each time, the index found support and worked its way back, a pattern that has defined the broader market's character in recent months.

Whether the record holds is another matter. Continued strength in technology, calm energy markets and stable bond yields would support further gains. A reversal in any of those, however, could quickly cool sentiment, and that tension is likely to shape trading in the sessions ahead.
