Mynt edges higher in record Philippine IPO as Asian stocks slide

4h ago

Mynt, the company behind the widely used GCash wallet, finished its first trading day slightly above its offer price, a muted but positive result that arrived while a broad selloff pressed equities across Asia. The gain was narrow, yet it kept the deal in positive territory when many regional benchmarks were moving lower.

The offering stands as the largest initial public offering ever mounted in the Philippine market, a milestone for a bourse that has rarely hosted transactions of this scale. Pricing and trading such a deal into a weaker regional tape turned the debut into a test of investor appetite for one of the country's most visible financial technology names.

GCash has become a household payments channel in the Philippines, handling transfers, bill payments and merchant transactions, which gives Mynt a large user base and a central position in the shift away from cash. That franchise is what buyers were asked to value, even as caution toward growth-oriented listings has weighed on debuts elsewhere in the region.

Attention now turns to whether the reception clears the way for other Philippine issuers waiting in the pipeline, or reinforces a wait-and-see posture while global markets remain unsettled. A debut that held above its offer price, however narrowly, gives those candidates one argument in favour of proceeding.
