Mozambique grants PawaPay subsidiary PSP licence
PawaPay has secured a Payment Service Provider licence from the Bank of Mozambique, giving the pan-African payments aggregator formal authorisation to operate in the country. The approval was issued through Quidexplus Mozambique, the company's local subsidiary, and extends the group's regulated footprint into another southern African market.
The PSP licence places the subsidiary under the oversight of Mozambique's central bank, the institution responsible for supervising payment services and safeguarding the integrity of the national payments system. Holding such authorisation is a prerequisite for providers that want to offer payment services locally rather than merely connecting to partners across borders.
PawaPay has built its business around aggregating payment methods for merchants that want to reach customers across Africa, a region where mobile money and alternative payment channels carry significant weight. Adding a licensed entity in Mozambique fits a broader pattern among African payments firms, which have pursued local approvals as regulators tighten rules on who may handle customer funds and transaction flows.
For merchants and businesses targeting Mozambican consumers, the licence signals a locally regulated route for accepting payments. It also positions the company to compete for a share of a market where digital payment adoption continues to develop, though the practical scope of the offering will depend on how quickly the newly licensed entity builds out its services.
