Latest BLS Data Point to Mild Inflation and Slower Hiring

2h ago

The Bureau of Labor Statistics in a new release presented updated figures on inflation, employment and productivity. Overall, the data suggest a mild pace of price increases alongside some easing in hiring.

For July 2026, the Consumer Price Index rose 0.1 percent from the prior month, while the Producer Price Index for final demand was unchanged. These readings indicate limited inflationary pressure at both the consumer and wholesale levels.

The unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent in July. Nonfarm payroll employment fell by 23,000, a preliminary figure that hints at a softer jobs market. Average hourly earnings increased $0.02, a minimal month-over-month gain.

In quarterly data from the second quarter of 2026, the Employment Cost Index advanced 0.9 percent and productivity climbed 1.4 percent. Together, the metrics show an economy that continues to expand without significant wage-driven inflation, although the payroll decline could bear watching.
