Circle Snaps Up IBM's Vast Blockchain Patent Collection

Circle Internet Financial, the firm behind the widely used USDC stablecoin, has closed a deal to take ownership of roughly 1,000 blockchain-related patents previously held by IBM. The acquisition marks one of the larger patent transactions in the digital asset sector, giving Circle a deep intellectual property library covering distributed ledger technology.

The move bolsters Circle’s competitive position as it navigates an increasingly crowded stablecoin market and expanding regulatory scrutiny. By securing these patents, the company gains potential licensing leverage and a defensive shield against future infringement claims, while also signaling its long-term commitment to blockchain infrastructure.

IBM has been a prolific contributor to blockchain research but has been trimming non-core assets in recent years.
